چکیده

“An interesting question is, ’Where did the name, dynamic programming, come from?’ The 1950s were not good years for mathematical research. We had a very interesting gentleman in Washington name Wilson. He was Secretary of Defense, and he actually had a pathological fear and hatred of the word, research. I’m not using the term lightly; I’m using it precisely. His face would suffuse, he would turn red, and he would get violent if people used the term, research, in his presence. You can imagine how he felt, then, about the term, mathematical. The RAND Corporation was employed by the Air Force, and the Air Force had Wilson as its boss, essentially. Hence, I felt I had to do something to shield Wilson and the Air Force from the fact that I was really doing mathematics inside the RAND Corporation. What title, what name, could I choose? In the first place I was interested in planning, in decision making, in thinking. But planning, is not a good word for various reasons. I decided therefore to use the word, ‘programming.’ I wanted to get across the idea that this was dynamic, this was multistage, this was time-varying—I thought, let’s kill two birds with one stone. Let’s take a word that has an absolutely precise meaning, namely dynamic, in the classical physical sense. It also has a very interesting property as an adjective, and that is it’s impossible to use the word, dynamic, in a pejorative sense. Try thinking of some combination that will possibly give it a pejorative meaning. It’s impossible. This, I thought dynamic programming was a good name. It was something not even a Congressman could object to. So I used it as an umbrella for my activities”. Richard Bellman (“Eye of the Hurricane: An autobiography”, World Scientific, 1984)

Irregular Data-parallel Objects in C++ 1 Irregularity and Data-parallelism

Most data-parallel languages use arrays to support paral-lelism. This regular data structure allows a natural development of regular parallel algorithms. The implementation of irregular algorithms requires a programming eeort to project the irregular data structures onto regular structures. We rst propose in this paper a classiication of existing data-parallel languages. We brieey describe thei...

Parleda: a Library for Parallel Processing in Computational Geometry Applications

ParLeda is a software library that provides the basic primitives needed for parallel implementation of computational geometry applications. It can also be used in implementing a parallel application that uses geometric data structures. The parallel model that we use is based on a new heterogeneous parallel model named HBSP, which is based on BSP and is introduced here. ParLeda uses two main lib...

Improving the Energy Management of Parallel Hybrid Electric Vehicle by Dynamic Programming Using Electro-Thermal Model of Battery

In this paper, an offline energy management system (EMS) is proposed for parallel hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). The proper energy management system is necessary for dividing torque between electrical motor and Internal Combustion Engine (ICE). The battery is a crucial component of hybrid electric vehicles and affects significantly the cost and the performance of the whole vehicle. The primar...

Measuring a Dynamic Efficiency Based on MONLP Model under DEA Control

Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a common technique in measuring the relative efficiency of a set of decision making units (DMUs) with multiple inputs and multiple outputs. ‎‎Standard DEA models are ‎‎quite limited models‎, ‎in the sense that they do not consider a DMU ‎‎at different times‎. ‎To resolve this problem‎, ‎DEA models with dynamic ‎‎structures have been proposed‎.‎In a recent pape...

A Modular Implementation of Data Structures in Bulk-Synchronous Parallel ML

A functional data-parallel language called BSML has been designed for programming Bulk-Synchronous Parallel algorithms. Many sequential algorithms do not have parallel counterparts and many non-computer science researchers do not want to deal with parallel programming. In sequential programming environments, common data structures are often provided through reusable libraries to simplify the de...

A Deterministic Notation for Cooperating

This paper proposes extensions of sequential programming languages for parallel programming that have the following features: 1. Dynamic Structures The process structure is dynamic: Processes and variables can be created and deleted. 2. Paradigm Integration The programming notation allows shared memory and message passing. 3. Determinism Demonstrating that a program is deterministic | all execu...
